What I’d done today: April 17

April 17, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my PhD life.]

Date: April 17
Time: 2:30pm

Today would be my general exam, if I could prepare my proposal on time. I am still working on revising my proposal, and my advisor doesn’t give me any further comment about the chapters I had done several days ago. I will go ask him what the condition is. This morning I didn’t stay at my office. Instead, I drove to downtown Seattle for application of my daughter’s Taiwan VISA. I made a big mistake of not checking the address of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office of Seattle before I left home. I didn’t expect that they moved to a new building. It wasted me an hour to back and forth my home just for finding the correct address. Anyway, I finished all documents required for Taiwan VISA. I will pick it up this Thursday. The morning time was gone, and I did nothing about my general proposal. Well, I guess I have to work hard tonight.

What I’d done today: April 13

April 13, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my PhD life.]

Date: April 13
Time: 1:16 pm

Finally, I finished Chapter 3 “Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering” this morning. There are 50 pages in total, which is more than I expected. I had turned this chapter to my boss for advising. Now I plan to review chapter 4 and 5, which were finished several weeks ago. During revising chapter 3, I found myself some mistaken concepts about PBEE terminology. I need to correct these errors in chapter 4 and 5. Hopefully the revised chapter 4 would be ready for my advisor next Monday.

What I’d done today: April 12

April 12, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my PhD life.]

Date: April 12
Time: noon

This morning I am working on the section of “closed-form PBEE model” in Chapter 3. I read a paper discussing how to develop and facilitate the closed-form solutions to PEER’s PBEE framework. I got several clues to write my proposal. Yesterday was another work-hard day. I finished the section of “numerical integration operations” discussing how to integral equation with discrete summation method. Well, so far so good. The speed of revision is still kind of slow to me. Anyway, I plan to finish Chapter 3 today.

Replace Hard Disk of iBook 12 ” G4 800

April 12, 2007

Yesterday night was my second trial to upgrade my iBook’s hard disk. The first time of trial, about four days ago, resulted in incomplete installation because of two hard-to-take-out screws. After posting my problem on the website, I got several useful feedbacks of how to handle this situation. With extremely large pressure pressed on the screwdriver, I finally turned the screws to loose by the help of pliers. Following the steps from iFixit, I successfully upgraded the hard disk to 80G 5400 rpm. It was a great experience, and let me understand that my iBook is still the top-notch product if you give her some upgrades. BTW, I am looking forward to buying the latest MacBook Pro to enrich my life.

What I’d done yesterday

April 11, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my PhD life.]

Date: April 11
Time: morning

Yesterday (April 10) was a “remarkable” day for me. My advisor and I agreed to postpone my PhD general exam to late May, after my coming back from Taiwan. What a huge bang on me. I didn’t expect this coming when I applied for general examination. It looked like I have no choice. My advisor needs more time to review my proposal, and I need time too to revise them. Since both of us can’t satisfy what we had done about proposal, changing the date of exam was the only option. Well, it was a kind of release to me, honestly. Timetable was really tight before yesterday. Both of my advisor and me were aware of it, but couldn’t do any better. I was disappointed, of course, for not going on track. But, what can I say? I plan to finish the draft before I leave for a short trip. Hope it works this time.

What I’d done last weekend

April 9, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my PhD life.]

Date: April 7~8
Time: weekend

Last weekend I stayed at home with my family in most of time. I went for shopping, buying food, fruit and vegetables. I didn’t do much on the subject of my proposal, thought I recognized that I don’t have much time. Well, I just wanted to lay down and take a rest. Saturday was a pretty sunny day. I helped my friend to move to her new house. Besides, I watched movies on TV on Saturday and Sunday. Nothing special to happen. However, I did work for four hours during Sunday afternoon at my office. I finished two more subsections of chapter 3. I felt good about this.

What I’d done today: April 6

Time: 9:08am
With a doughnut and coffee, I am thinking what happened yesterday evening. Yeah, the huge revision of my general proposal. Honestly, I felt like having a slap on my face when my advisor was talking to me. Well, after one night to work on, I saw the bright side of the event. I didn’t lose too much, at least I got a well organized outline to follow up. This was good for me, actually. My advisor is a detail researcher, and has his own rules. This is fine to me, too. As an international student, this means a great chance of learning something new from totally different culture. I will work hard on the sections of chapter 3. Let’s see how far I can go today.

What I’d done today: April 5

April 5, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my boring PhD life.]

Date: April 5, 2007
Time: afternoon

This morning I played around my general presentation. As I mentioned, I use Keynote 3 to prepare my presentation. To achieve a great keynote for my general exam, I need a professional theme to support my ideas. Therefore, I purchased PowerBlue Pro from KeynoteUser.com, a very flexible theme for professional purposes. I continued to refine my presentation by adding charts and tables. I really satisfied with the outcomes from PowerBlue Pro, letting me have a good mood on dry and tough works.

What I’d done yesterday

April 4, 2007

[This is my diary post to record what I have done during my boring PhD life.]

Date: April 3, 2007
Time: Evening

Iwas writing chapter 3 of my general examination proposal. The general exam of my PhD program is going to be held on April 17. The date is coming. But my advisor looks like he is too busy to revise my proposal draft. I don’t like that. I know my writing could be difficult to him to understand in some degree, since I am not a native English speaker. But I tried my best. Hope he can finish his duty as soon as possible.
